MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s security forces have raided the homes of a number of opposition supporters in Mogadishu on Wednesday night, the latest in a string of federal government efforts to prevent protests over delayed elections from sweeping through the city.
A number of opposition sources have confirmed to Somaliguardian that masked soldiers broke into the homes of several opposition supporters and politicians.
Security forces have not made any arrests but the opposition supporters whose homes were raided have been intimidated and some say they have been sternly warned against involvement in anti-government protests.
It comes days after former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accused the federal government of sending troops overnight to break into the homes of people thought to be organizing protests, politicians and businessmen, some of whom were arrested.
Over the past few days, there have been reports that security forces arrested a senior commander of Turkish-trained Gorgor special forces over his refusal to launch an overnight raid on the homes of popular opposition supporters.
