MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A roadside bomb attack has targeted an African Union military convoy in the north of Somalia’s capital on Monday morning, local security officials say.
The sound of a loud explosion was heard across the Somali capital during morning rush hour, followed by intense gunfire.
An explosion, said to be a roadside bomb targeted a convoy of African Union peacekeepers in Karan district, north of Mogadishu. AMISOM peacekeepers subsequently opened fire on residents, though it was not immediately clear if there were civilians hit.
Witnesses who have spoken to Somaliguardian say they saw an armored AU military vehicle damaged by the blast.
Somali police have reached the scene of the attack and briefly halted traffic to prevent further attacks.
Al-Shabaab armed group has taken responsibility. The militant group in Somalia often carries out attacks in the capital and other cities under control of allied Somali and foreign forces in the war-torn nation.
