MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Interior Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said on Monday Al-Shabaab-run courts in the Daynile district of the capital Mogadishu must be closed and called on the Minister of Justice to provide alternative services to the Somali public.
He said the current government should focus on providing reliable judicial services and fighting corruption within the judiciary sector to ensure the closure of Al-Shabaab courts that have attracted thousands of Somalis over the past years.
When you see the number of vehicles parked outside one of the Al-Shabaab courts on the outskirts of Daynile district, one would think of Heathrow Airport and I have heard that some of Banadir region’s geometers are collaborating with them, he added.
Al-Shabaab runs dozens of courts throughout Somalia where people go to settle land, family and other disputes. Military and police officers are among the people who seek justice in the militant group’s courts.
