MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –Al-Shabaab militants have overrun a military base near the town of Ba’adwayne in Somalia’s Mudug region, local officials have confirmed on Wednesday.
Heavily armed islamist fighters stormed a Somali army base in Shabellow village near the town of Ba’adwayn in the south of Mudug region.
Fierce fighting took place inside the village where heavy gunfire exchanged by the two sides was heard across surrounding towns.
At least 9 soldiers are said to have been killed in the attack with an unspecified number of wounded soldiers rushed to makeshift military hospital in Ba’adwayne.
A local military official told Somaliguardian that one vehicle was damaged after a roadside bomb explosion hit a convoy heading from Ba’adwayne to reinforce the base under attack.
Al-Shabaab armed group says it was behind the attack, claiming to have overpowered troops and fully in control of Shabellow village and surrounding areas.
