MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and his intelligence chief Fahad Yasin have invited opposition leaders for talks, days after presidential candidates running against the incumbent leader in upcoming elections called for the dissolution of electoral commissions allegedly comprising soldiers and state employees.
Galmudug leader Ahmed Qoorqoor informed opposition leaders that president Farmajo and national intelligence chief had invited them to a meeting to bring an end to current political stalemate.
Mr Qoorqoor joined presidential candidates meeting at Jazeera hotel near Mogadishu’s international airport on Sunday night to present the government’s proposal.
The opposition leaders have been discussing the matter in a closed door meeting on Monday where presidential candidates exchanged views on whether to accept the proposal or decline in the midst of what presidential candidates call a “campaign of attrition” the federal has set in motion as election nears.
It comes days after the mayor of Mogadishu Omar Filish called for the “capture and killing” of presidential candidates if they do not refrain from inciting unrest in the city, hours after the opposition leaders issued a communiqué wherein they put forward a number of demands including the dissolution of electoral commissions, pulling out government troops from Gedo region and removing the national intelligence chief.
