Pro-opposition forces seize key security checkpoint in Somalia’s Garowe town

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Troops loyal to Puntland opposition candidates, who had been defeated in a recent presidential vote, seized a key security checkpoint in the regional capital Garowe ahead of the inauguration of the reelected President Saeed Abdullahi Deni.

Puntland’s Danab counterterrorism forces said on Saturday that they had captured a security checkpoint on the southern outskirts of Garowe in a move aimed at disrupting the upcoming inauguration ceremony.

Disputes between Puntland political stakeholders have been dragging on for the last few years, leading to armed clashes that left dozens of people dead.
