Somalia: UN says guard member killed in Al-Shabaab-claimed mortar attack

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United Nations mission in Somalia said on Friday a guard member was killed in an Al-Shabaab-claimed mortar attack on the heavily-fortified Halane base inside Adan Adde International Airport, which is home to foreign diplomatic missions.

“In addition to the death of a UN Guard Unit member, the mortar rounds damaged infrastructure. Al-Shabaab has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack,” The United Nations said.

“The UN Guard Unit plays an integral role in ensuring the safety and security of UN staff working in support of Somali peace- and state-building. We condemn this act of violence, and our thoughts are with the family and colleagues of the victim during this difficult time,” the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, Catriona Laing said in a statement.

The United Nations stressed that in addition to the death of the guard member, the mortar rounds damaged infrastructure. The UN called for bringing those responsible to justice and promised that it will continue supporting the Somali government in efforts to restore peace.
