MOGADISHU (somaliguardian) –Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo addressing MPs on Saturday in an extraordinary session of parliament, said Dhusamareb agreement invalidates previously signed deal with federal member states in Baidoa back in 2018.
The president speaking to MPs at the parliament hall in Mogadishu stressed that a political agreement was earlier reached with federal member states in Baidoa – which sought to hold a popular election in 2020 and that Dhusamareb deal is yet “another political agreement that nullifies previously agreed terms”.
“Between July 18 – 22, consultative conference on elections opened in the town of Dhusamareb that had in attendance the leaders of the regional states and the federal government with the aim of discussing the process of upcoming elections to reach a political agreement in compliance with the constitution. Remember, a political agreement was earlier reached in Baidoba in 2018 that corroborated the communiqué of London summit to hold popular elections in Somalia in the year 2020-21,” said Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
Somali president described recently signed agreement in Dhusamareb as a repetition that could nullify previous deal reached in Baidoa.
“The federal government and federal member states reached a political agreement in Baidoa in 2018, this is a second agreement that invalidates earlier signed terms.” the president added in an apparent tone of dissatisfaction with international community bolstered Dhusamareb conference.
During his remarks, the president promised that he will return any deal reached with federal member states to the parliament for approval, adding that MPs represent their respective regional states and the nation as a whole.
Reactions to the president’s speech
Abdikarin Hussein Guled, leader of SAHAN party said the speech of president Farmajo to parliament showed his dismay and frustration to arrive at a political agreement with other stakeholders on the process of upcoming elections.
Abdirahman Abdishakur, leader of WADAJIR political party said the president made his position clear and his trip to Dhusamareb is a weary move to keep other stakeholders busy in an unproductive conference.
