MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Kenyan troops shot dead at least one civilian near the town of Elwak on Somalia’s border with Kenya, after soldiers detained dozens of local residents.
The Kenyan troops had rounded up dozens of residents in Yado, a small village on the outskirts of the border town of Elwak during a military operation whose objective has not been immediately known.
Troops later shot dead at least 1 resident and wounded 3 others. There were conflicting accounts of the number of dead, with some saying that Kenyan troops transported several dead bodies to Mandera town on the Kenyan side of the border.
Among the detained were 5 well-known traditional leaders whose whereabouts are still unknown.
The dead body of a resident – who was killed by the KDF – has later been found in a rural area a few kilometers outside Yado village.
Over the past few months, Kenyan troops in Somalia have stepped up attacks on Somali civilians in Gedo and Juba regions. Hundreds of residents and their livestock have been either killed or displaced by Kenyan airstrikes in those regions since Kenyan incursion of Somalia in late 2011.
