Somalia’s president appoints ex-Hiran governor to lead clan militias fighting insurgents

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday appointed the former governor of Hiran region Ali Jayte Osman to the office for the coordination of local forces participating in the fight against Al-Shabaab, state media reported.

The appointment comes amid longstanding tensions in the region over the dismissal of Jayte by Hirshabelle authorities and just a few days after regional Vice President Yusuf Ahmed Hagar accused the federal government of undermining progress in the region.
