MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Warplanes belonging to the Kenyan military and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) carried out a number of air strikes in Al-Shabaab-controlled areas in south and central Somalia on Friday, local media reported.
Kenyan fighter jets hit residential areas in Sakow and Salagle towns in the Middle Juba region, killing at least 2 civilians, including children and wounding three others.
Images shared by media affiliated with Al-Shabaab showed buildings completely destroyed by the air raids, including the headquarters of Hormuud Telecom, one of the country’s leading telecommunication companies.
Meanwhile, UAE warplanes conducted air raids in Saban-sabley village, an area under the control of Al-Shabaab insurgents in Galgadud region on Friday, Caasimada Online news website reported. Casualties by the attacks have not been immediately known.
It is the first time the UAE has carried out an air raid in Somalia since it boosted its military presence in the Horn of Africa nation after signing a defense and security pact with Somali authorities.
Somali state media reported on Friday that a fourth air strike was carried out near the agricultural town of Jamame in the Middle Juba region allegedly targeting a meeting of Al-Shabaab leaders.
