MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The US military said on Monday it had carried out a new airstrike in an Al-Shabaab stronghold in south Somalia, days after the group’s leader appeared in a video.
AFRICOM said the strike took place in the town of Jilib in the southern Somali region of Middle Juba on Saturday, but did not give details about the target and casualties.
“The command’ initial assessment is that no civilians were injured or killed,” US military said in a statement.
The air raid came as Somali spy chief Mahad Salad was visiting Washington, meeting with US officials from the Pentagon, CIA and FBI in an effort to ask for more American support for Somali security forces battling insurgents.
