Somalia’s president sends off hundreds of troops joining offensive against militants

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday sent off a new battalion of the army joining the second phase of an offensive against the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab.

Mohamud gave a speech to hundreds of newly-trained SNA members at General Gordon military base in Mogadishu, hours after main roads in the city had been closed to traffic.

Somali President urged the newly-trained army members to boost efforts to dislodge militants from south and central regions of the war-torn Horn of Africa nation.

The army backed by US and Turkish air force drones had managed to retake a number of towns and villages in central Somalia, but faced battle reversals due to militant attacks overrunning a number of bases that led to the death of soldiers and seizure of military vehicles, and weapons.
