MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 13 people were killed and 40 others wounded on Monday after heavy fighting erupted between Somaliland troops and local forces in the town of Lasanod in northern Somalia’s Sool region.
Mortar shells landed on residential areas in the town, leaving a number of civilians, including children, dead.
Somaliland authorities and local clan elders accused each other for starting the attack, which led to hours-long street battles in the densely populated town.
It came hours after regional clan leaders said they are “part of Somalia’s federal government” and will rule their region with the country’s constitution, ending decades-long rule by the separatist authorities of Somaliland.
