MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Talks between Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the leader of the northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland ended without progress on Monday.
Mohamud rebuffed a demand by the regional leader to appoint loyal officers to key security posts, in an effort to further tighten his grip on regional power despite growing resentment and local opposition against his administration.
Deni also urged Somali President not to intervene in the current political turmoil in Southwest state and withdraw support to Mogadishu-based opposition leaders against the southern region’s state leader Abdiasis Laftagaren.
Somali President has reportedly turned down the request, saying that he has constitutional right to oppose illegal steps taken by regional presidents, referring to a controversial term extension for Southwest leader.
