MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – First Deputy Speaker of Somalia’s parliament Sa’diya Samatar said her life is in serious danger, days after making offensive remarks that had drown rebuke from the country’s religious scholars, Caasimada Online news website reported on Thursday.
Sa’adiya said she had received death threats following a recent speech endorsing a controversial sexual offenses bill that is expected to be debated at parliament.
Somalia’s 10th parliament unanimously rejected the law as contrary to the Islamic Sharia and the Somali culture.
The Somali MP said her remarks had been misinterpreted and stressed that she did not intend to campaign for the controversial law, but was calling for the protection of women’s rights.
