MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A meeting between Somalia’s leaders set to take place in the town of Garowe on February 15 has been delayed after some of the country’s regional leaders rejected the president’s proposal.
Somalia’s incumbent president, whose term expired last week, called for a meeting between the country’s leaders in the town of Garowe but the presidents of Puntland and Jubaland proposed otherwise, insisting on convening the meeting in the capital Mogadishu.
Opposition leaders also supported Puntland and Jubaland leaders’ suggestion and urged participation in the conference.
Dispute over where the meeting should be held still remains unresolved and the Somali political stakeholders, facing international pressure to resume talks to end the electoral dispute, have not commented on the delay.
Hopes of a breakthrough over the election impasse has been dashed after Somali leaders deadlocked over a number of contentious issues during talks in Dhusamareb, that brought last-ditch efforts to resolve the dispute to an abysmal failure on February 6.
