MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 4 people were killed and 10 others wounded in a suicide car bomb explosion in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu on Saturday.
A vehicle packed with explosives exploded near Sayidka junction, an area inside the security perimeter of Somalia’s presidential compound in Mogadishu.
Police spokesman told local media that 7 people wounded in the attack. But rescuers who reached the scene immediately after the explosion say 4 people were killed and more than 10 others wounded.
The road where the assault took place is heavily guarded by security forces and is popularly used by government officials.
According to Somali security officials, the vehicle sped through Dabka checkpoint and was fired on before crossing Sayidka security post where it exploded.
Photos circulated on social media show a trail of destruction in the area where the bombing took place.
It comes days after warning messages were made public on social media about imminent attacks after vehicles laden with explosives allegedly entered the capital.
Another blast occurred in the capital on Friday night targeting a police post in the city’s Hodan district. Local radio stations quoted police spokesman as saying that a grenade was thrown at police officers, which resulted in no casualties.
As Somalia leaders fail to end deadlock over what should be done after the term of the country’s president expired on February 8, attacks have spiraled out of control.
Many local officials told media they were fleeing for Turkey to escape growing militant assaults during the transition period. Commissioners of a number of districts in Mogadishu took indefinite leave of absence to spend time in Turkey until elections are held.
Fear over insurgent attacks also caused shutting down Kahda district headquarters in the west of the Somali capital where authorities received intelligence reports about imminent militant threats.
