MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s new cabinet ministers announced on Monday, four weeks after Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble was endorsed by parliament following his appointment.
List of the new cabinet, consisting of deputy Prime Minister and 26 ministries was made public late on Wednesday following weeks of tough negotiations over individuals to be appointed to ministerial posts, with the president, his intelligence chief and the speaker of parliament selecting most of the new ministers.
Among the renowned members of the outgoing cabinet who lost their posts are Education Minister Abdullahi Godah Barre and Security Minister Mohamed Abdukar Islow who had been suspected of having ties to Somalia’s former prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire.
Deputy Prime Minister Khadar Guled, Finance Minister Abdirahman Bayle, FM Ahmed Isse Awad and the Minister of Health Fowsiya Abukar are among members of the outgoing cabinet who retain their posts.
Half the new cabinet comprises outgoing ministers who had maintained close ties to the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo who is now exerting major efforts in curbing the influence of his challengers in the upcoming presidential elections.
The announcement of the new cabinet comes only 3 months until the presidential election and it’s yet unclear if the new ministers will be able to achieve the intended objective of leading the country to a timely election.
As campaign by presidential hopefuls seems to have been set in motion, the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo urged his prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and Galmudug leader Ahmed Qoorqoor to help lay the groundwork for his campaign, in a trail to challenge prominent candidates, among them his former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and former presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.
