LONDON (Somaliguardian) – The man arrested by UK police on suspicion of murder of British MP David Amess has been identified as the son of former advisor to Somalia’s prime minister Harbi Ali Kulane.
The suspect is 25-year-old British citizen with Somali heritage, who has not been known to the security services, though he had previously been referred to Prevent, the UK’s counter-terrorism scheme for those thought at risk of radicalization, the BBC reported.
The attacker acted alone and was “self-radicalized”, police and security forces said, pointing out that he may have been inspired by Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group in Somalia.
Ali’s father Harbi Ali Kulane told the The Sunday Times that his son was in custody, adding: “I’m feeling very traumatized”. “It’s not something that I expected or even dreamed of.”
On Saturday, police said that detectives had until Friday, October 22, to question the suspect who had been detained under UK’s Terrorism Act. Police also carried out searches at three addresses in London on Saturday in a “fast-paced investigation”.
