At least 14 Soldiers Killed in IED Attack in Kenya’s Lamu County, Militants Claim

Kenya

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – At least 14 KDF soldiers were killed and a number of others wounded after a vehicle they had been traveling ran over a roadside bomb in Lamu County, Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab said on Tuesday, a claim denied by Kenyan Defense Forces.

The attack which took place on the road linking Milimani to Baure in Lamu county on Tuesday targeted a convoy of Kenyan troops, the group said in a statement via affiliated media.

The two areas are within the dense Boni Forest where Kenyan troops had launched a multi-agency Operation Linda Boni in September 2015, with an objective to drive Al-Shabaab militants from the forest. The operation was later renamed as Amani Boni.

A spokesperson for the Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) said, in a statement, that a soldier who was part of a team that was on a routine patrol sustained injuries as a result of the blast.

KDF soldiers operating under Operation Amani Boni while on routine patrol between Milimani and Baure in Lamu County encountered an IED attack orchestrated by suspected Al-Shabaab terrorists,” KDF spokesperson Esther Wanjiku said in a statement.

During the attack, one KDF soldier was seriously injured and has been evacuated to Nairobi’s Defense Forces Memorial Hospital for further medical treatment.”
