US Hits Eritrea with Fresh Sanctions over Tigray War

Eritrea

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – The United States on Monday imposed new sanctions over the conflict in northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region, months after it threatened to take further actions against Ethiopian and Eritrean officials stoking violence if they fail to reverse course.

In a statement, the Treasury department said the chief of staff of the defense forces of Eritrea, Filipos Woldeyohannes, was sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act for leading an entity accused of “despicable acts”, including massacres, looting and gang-rapes of women and girls in the conflict-torn Tigray region.

The United States has again called for complete and permanent withdrawal of Eritrean troops from northern Ethiopia, weeks after Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the neighboring country’s forces were re-entering the war-wrecked northern region.

In response, Eritrea’s foreign ministry called the accusations unacceptable and urged the United States to “bring the case to an independent adjudication if it indeed has facts to prove its false allegations”.
