MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Members of the Council of Presidential Candidates and foreign ambassadors on Tuesday met the leaders of the National Consultative Council as election talks continue in Somalia’s capital for the second day in a row.
Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble convened on Monday a meeting of the National Consultative Council, just a week after he had accused the President of attempts to prevent the summit from taking place.
It has not been immediately clear what the opposition leaders and foreign ambassadors discussed during separate meetings with members of the council, including regional presidents, the Prime Minister and the governor of Banadir region.
UN envoy to Somalia James Swan said he was “pleased to join international partners who met with the National Consultative Council” in the capital and encouraged the NCC to expedite the electoral process and “improve its credibility for the good of all Somalis”.
Electoral procedures, election timeline and security are among key issues on the agenda amid rift between the Premier and the President, which escalated last week following an alleged coup attempt. There are reports that Roble wants to take over security responsibilities to counter possible attempts by Farmajo to undermine ongoing polls.
