Somalia Election Body Splits as PM’s Dismissal of Officials Touches Off Fresh Political Storm

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s election teams have split over the Prime Minister’s recent dismissal of 7 members of the Electoral Disputes Resolution Committee and an announcement made on Monday by the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT).

FIET said on Monday that it would delay elections, reportedly under the behest of Villa Somalia, until the case of the Electoral Disputes Resolution team is solved. In another statement, it claimed that the Prime Minister had violated the immunity of some members of the disbanded team.

It appears that the dismissal of the 7 officials has triggered a new rift between the Prime Minister and President Farmajo, though critics voice concern that this could be yet another ruse to delay the polls and legitimize the election of vetted candidates, including the current spy chief, who were swept to victory.

Election teams for Jubaland, Somaliland and Banadir said they were not part of the decision to halt ongoing elections and were not engaged in consultations over the matter.

Somali Prime Minister and President’s offices have not immediately commented on the renewed dispute.
