US, Other International Partners Call on Somalia’s Leaders to Speed Up Elections

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s international partners said in a statement on Friday that they were concerned by continuing delays in the Horn of Africa country’s electoral process and called for the acceleration of efforts to complete credible and inclusive polls.

We urge national and Federal Member State leaders and election management bodies to advance quickly to complete inclusive and credible House of the People elections before the end of 2021, respecting the 30 per cent minimum quota for women. We also call on Galmudug authorities to immediately elect the two remaining seats to complete the Upper House electoral process,” the international partners said.

International partners note the recent announcement of a settlement in the dispute between the President and Prime Minister. We urge the two leaders to implement the agreed terms promptly and re-focus on national priorities, especially completion of the electoral process.”

The international partners repeated their call for full and rapid implementation of the September 17 2020 and May 27 2021 electoral agreements.

In a separate statement on twitter, the US embassy in Somalia urged the leaders of the country’s five regional states to complete parliamentary election, saying the “electoral process must be accelerated”.
