NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says foreign troops have fought alongside Tigray forces in recent battles for control of two key towns in northern Ethiopia’s Amhara region.
Speaking to senior government officials in the first televised address since Tigrayan rebels seized the towns of Kombolcha and Dessie, Abiy said “fighters who are not Ethiopian have taken part” in the recent fighting around the two cities.
“There were white and black people who fought alongside the TPLF and died,” he said, but gave no specific details and provided no evidence for his claim.
Tigray forces have denied the prime minister’s claims.
Ethiopian leader made a week-end call to arms after the towns of Dessie and Kombolcha fell to the hands of the rebel fighters, bringing parts of a key highway leading to the capital Addis Ababa under their control.
“Battle can go wrong for different reasons but in the end the country will win the war,” Abiy said.
Ethiopian prime minister accused the Tigrayan rebels of wanting to sweep back to power to implement a policy in which members of one ethnic group are treated as “first-class citizens”.
