MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs held talks with the new US envoy for the Horn of Africa and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday, as power fight between country’s leaders drags on.
Last week, the United States said the Horn of Africa country’s elections were a year behind schedule and threatened to take actions “against spoilers if the new National Consultative Council timeline is not met”.
During a phone conversation, Somali Foreign Minister Abdisaid Muse Ali discussed with US special envoy for the Horn of Africa David Satterfield and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee on bilateral and regional issues and both sides exchanged views on recent developments, a statement reads.
“Somalia’s Foreign Minister thanked the U.S government for their unwavering support and contribution to peace and security in Somalia and continued commitment,” Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Last month, Molly Phee held separate phone conversations with the President and Prime Minister, hours after the Premier accused the country’s embattled leader of staging a failed coup to overthrow the government. The Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs supported Roble’s efforts to hold quick polls and asked his rival Farmajo to rally behind the Prime Minister’s commitment in the conduct of inclusive elections.
