MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble asked donors to deliver on their promises to help fund elections in the strife-torn nation, days after the country’s leaders agreed on conducting the presidential vote on October 10.
At a meeting with international partners in the capital, Mogadishu on Monday, the prime minister whose government had achieved in stemming months-long tensions stoked by delayed polls, said he was ready to hold free and fair elections, but the country had yet to receive international funding for the vote.
It came a day after the federal electoral commission elected a chair on Sunday, weeks after government-appointed committee had removed members said to be state employees, intelligence agents and popular supporters of the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
Mr Roble urged the international community to back his efforts in holding inclusive polls, in which all candidates will have fair opportunity to contest without any hindrances.
Somalia’s international partners accepted the prime minister’s appeal and promised to play a pivotal role in ensuring the upcoming vote takes place on its scheduled date.
