WASHINGTON (Somaliguardian) – The United States has supported a decision by the African Union Peace and Security Council on Thursday to condemn a move to extend the terms of Somalia’s outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and the parliament.
In a statement, US Bureau for African Affairs said it welcomes African Union mediation and urged Somali leaders to reach an agreement on election dispute.
“We support the African Union Peace and Security Council @auc_paps decision condemning the mandate extension passed last week by the Somali parliament,” statement reads.
“We welcome @_AfricanUnion mediation & urge Somalia’s leaders to agree to a way forward to resolve the electoral crisis promptly.”
It comes days after the US Department of State decried Somali parliament’s vote to extend embattled president’s term and threatened to impose sanctions and visa restrictions on those involved in the move if the decision is not rescinded immediately.
