MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s civil society groups raised concerns as federal and regional leaders remain deadlocked over key electoral aspects during meeting in the capital Mogadishu.
Spokesman for the Somali civil society groups Osman Muhidin Moalim welcomed the ongoing meeting between federal and regional leaders, calling for expediting the efforts aimed at reaching breakthrough on holding timely elections at the end of this year.
The civil society groups also called on the Somali leaders meeting in Mogadishu not to waste time on lengthy and unproductive talks.
In a communiqué issued following a conference that had in attendance dozens of civil society members, the participants urged federal and regional leaders to compromise to reach historic deal that could pave the way for timely elections in the Horn of Africa nation.
Somalia’s civil society groups threatened that they will convene broad-based talks hosting traditional leaders, youths, women, religious scholars, businesspeople and intellectuals of the country to decide on the political future of the war-torn nation, if leaders fail to end deadlock over contentious election issues. In addition, spokesman for the civil society groups said the meeting would generate recommendations crucial for the future of the country.
