MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s former president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday said the recent move by the President to suspend powers of the Prime Minister to dismiss and appoint officials showed that he has no plans for elections.
Mohamud praised the Prime Minister’s leadership in pushing for credible and all-agreeable elections, and condemned attempts at undermining his role.
Tensions between Somali leaders have been running high over the past weeks, nominally over the murder of a female spy, which have seen the President and his Prime Minister exchanging public statements.
The former President raised concern about the political uncertainty in the Horn of Africa country, which he said, had dashed hopes of citizens and investors for a better future.
“Farmajo do not tell us that you have withdrawn powers from the Prime Minister, with whom you had delegated the national security; conscience cannot accept that. Yesterday, you had fired former Premier when election [issue] was raised. It shows that no election is in your plan,”
Mohamud, who is currently among the leaders of the Council of Presidential Candidates – a conglomerate of opposition parties – called on the regional state presidents to continue playing their constructive role in ensuring the peaceful conduct of transparent elections.
