MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in the northeastern Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland on Sunday said a “protracted” dispute between the Horn of Africa nation’s President and Prime Minister will be brought to an end in the region’s capital, Garowe.
It comes as the semi-autonomous region plans to host a meeting of regional presidents to discuss the current political standoff in the country and relations between the federal member states, despite fears raised that conference is intended to undermine the Prime Minister’s leading role in the elections.
The deputy Minister of Finance for the regional state Abdi Ibrahim Warsame, popularly known as Qawdhan said escalating tensions between the country’s most powerful leaders are set to be resolved in the town of Garowe.
“Every protracted dispute between outgoing President and acting Prime Minister is brought to an end and solved in the capital of Puntland, Garowe,” Deputy Minister of Finance for Puntland said.
Qawdhan did not say whether the region will host talks between Farmajo and Roble to ease the current tensions before their wrangling reaches a point of no-return.
Puntland on Sunday boycotted a meeting of National Security Council called by the President, in which former intelligence chief Fahad Yasin would submit a report on the murder of Ikran Tahlil on Saturday, and said Farmajo has no authority to convene such a meeting after his term ended.
Regional authorities also ruled out that the meeting of regional presidents it is due to host this week will focus on elections and is aimed at obstructing the Premier’s efforts to hold credible elections, saying the conference is “constitutional” and will only raise attempts to improve ties between the federal member states.
