MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s foreign minister Mohamed Abdirizak has attended a conference of foreign ministers of a global coalition to defeat the Islamic State (ISIS) group in Italy’s capital, Rome on Monday.
The Somali top diplomat said he was attending ministerial meeting of a global coalition to defeat Daesh or ISIS during which attendees will discuss “global action to defeat the evils of terror”.
In a tweet shortly after the meeting kicked off on Monday, Mr Abdirizak added that he would “update the coalition on Somalia’s trial and efforts to find lasting solutions to terrorism”.
Over the past decade, Somalia has been plagued by conflict as the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab wages an insurgency campaign to topple western-backed government.
An ISIS off-shoot is still present in mountainous hideouts in the northeastern Puntland state, though its insurgency campaign is not as bold and effective as the Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab. From 2019 until 2021, it has carried out fewer than 7 attacks across the country and has been facing pressure from Puntland authorities, who vowed to crush its militias.
