Arab League Foreign Ministers to Meet on Ethiopia Dam Dispute

Ethiopia

DOHA (Somaliguardian) – Arab League foreign ministers are due to hold an extraordinary meeting in Qatar’s capital, Doha on Tuesday to discuss a heightened dispute between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia over a mega dam Addis Ababa is constructing on the Blue Nile River.

Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Hossam Zaki told Middle East News Agency on Saturday that the meeting will be held at the request of Egypt and Sudan.

It comes days after the two countries agreed to rally an international support for efforts aimed at pushing Ethiopia to accept negotiating seriously on the Renaissance Dam and pointed out that hopes for a breakthrough were receding after talks mediated by the African Union “reached a dead end”.

Ethiopia, in a statement, said it was committed to African Union-led solution to bring an end to the decade-long dam crisis.

Chairperson of the African Commision Union Moussa Faki arrived in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum on Saturday for talks with Sudanese government officials aimed at dialing down the tensions and returning to the negotiations.
