MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s government on Wednesday confirmed twin car bombings targeting a military base housing its troops in south Somalia ahead of planned offensive Addis Ababa is expected to launch against Al-Qaeda-aligned insurgents in the neighboring Horn of Africa nation.
“The Ethiopian Defense Forces (ENDF) stopped the attackers in their tracks before they could wreak havoc,” Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted. “The ENDF neutralized suicide bombers and destroyed weapons to be used by the terrorist group.”
Al-Shabaab armed group claimed responsibility just a few weeks after its fighters had overran a Ugandan Forward Operating Base (FOB) in the town of Bula Mareer, killing dozens of soldiers and seizing vast caches of weapons.
The rebel group said the first car bomb hit “the headquarters of the local military command” while the second targeted a weapons and ammunition warehouse.
The government-owned Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that the first car bomb exploded at the entrance of the ENDF base, causing “significant damage” and injuring four soldiers.
