MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The prosecutor-general of the northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland Ahmed Mohamed Yusuf on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for four prominent opposition politicians.
The official accused the defendants of being behind an attack in the town of Garowe that targeted a convoy carrying election ballot boxes this week. The assault led to the death of at least four soldiers.
Puntland prosecutor-general ordered the detention of Khadar Abdirahman Mohamed, Hassan Shire Abdi, Mohamud Warsame Farah and Mohamed Jama Farah. The politicians have strongly opposed a controversial local government election regional authorities are planning to hold amid growing allegations over attempts to extend the term in office of President Saeed Abdullahi Deni.
