Al-Shabaab militants attack army base in central Somalia

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab attacked army base in central Somalia on Wednesday, days after Somali troops with US air support seized a number of villages in Galmudug State.

Heavily-armed fighters stormed a base in the village of Budbud outside the town of Gal’ad in Galgadud region after a vehicle laden with explosives was rammed into the fortified camp.

A spokesman for Al-Shabaab Abdiasis Abu Musab said they had overran the base, killing soldiers and seizing military vehicles, but gave no further details about the assault.

Somali MP Yasin Farey told VOA Somali that troops were able to repel the complex attack, adding that there were few casualties. Claims by both sides could not be independently verified due to the remote nature of the area where the base is located.
