MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Hundreds of Eritrea-trained Somali troops have vacated a frontline base in the Middle Shabelle region in an attempt to stage mutiny over insufficient pay, Caasimada Online news website reported on Monday.
The soldiers manning a military camp in Daru-nima’ village in the Middle Shabelle region emptied the area in protest over poor living conditions and chose to reach the capital by foot before being stopped outside the coastal town of Adale.
Army officials achieved to return the soldiers to their barracks and are expected to take part in an anticipated offensive against Al-Shabaab to retake large swathes of territory still under the control of rebels in the central Somali regions of Middle Shabelle, Mudug and Galgadud.
Since their return home, hundreds of soldiers who had completed training in Eritrea escaped and some have surrendered to the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants.
