MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Somali army base outside the port city of Kismayo on Thursday, weeks after Jubaland authorities vowed to launch an offensive aimed at retaking key towns in the state.

Al-Shabaab’s military spokesman Abdiasis Abu Musab told media affiliated with the group that 36 soldiers had been killed in a dawn attack on Baarsanguuni military outside the coastal city of Kismayo. He added that insurgents had seized weapons and ammunition after overrunning the camp.

Somali government said five soldiers were killed and seven others injured in the assault. Jubaland military officials told media that troops had repulsed the attack, inflicting losses on the rebels.
