MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia has again postponed elections slated for July 25 amid renewed dispute over the selection of electoral delegates weeks after the country’s federal and regional leaders reached a widely accepted agreement to end months-long political crisis and hold a free and fair vote.
The indirect election of the upper house of parliament was due to begin on Sunday and a number of delegates would participate in the vote for senate seats from all regional states.
“Even though the plan was the upper house election to start around the various states today, there is a delay, the election may not take place as planned,” a member of the electoral commission told AFP on condition of anonymity.
It comes amid renewed dispute over the delegates and committees set to manage the election of MPs, triggering fear that the long-delayed vote will again ratchet up tensions with the opposition leaders still accusing the current acting president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo of meddling in the process.
A spokesman for the federal government, Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu, told AFP that the elections were “postponed,” without providing details.
