MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least seven people have been killed and ten others wounded after a suicide bomber attacked a popular restaurant in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Friday night, hours after Acting US Secretary of Defense made an announced visit to the city.
The attacked restaurant located near the airport of Mogadishu is popularly attended by government officials and state employees, many of whom were inside the building at the time the explosion occurred.
Witnesses say the suicide bomber bypassed security screening at the entrance of Gelato Divini shortly before blowing himself up inside the restaurant.
At least seven people have been killed in the attack, among them officials and state employees and ten others wounded who have been rushed to the city’s hospitals.
Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Somali government has condemned the blast and sent condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the “terrorist” attack.
The explosion took place at a high security area and inside the heavily guarded security perimeter of Mogadishu’s Adan Adde airport. It’s unclear how the suicide bomber managed access to the area without being detected.
