ADDIS ABABA (Somaliguardian) – Leader of Ethiopia’s Tigray region Debretsion Gebremichael said on Sunday that fighting was still continuing on several fronts in northern Ethiopia between local forces and federal troops.
The leader of the restive region confirmed that forces loyal to Tigray bombed Eritrea’s capital, Asmara on Saturday night in what he said followed Eritrea’s deployment of “16 divisions of its army on several fronts to fight Tigrayan Peoples Liberation Army troops.
In a text message interview with Reuters News Agency Mr Gebremichael lamented “our country is attacking us with a foreign country, Eritrea. Treason!” but Eritrea had earlier denied involvement in Ethiopia’s conflict.
Hundreds of people are so far known to have been killed in the 12-day old conflict in the restive Tigray region with reports of dozens of civilians hacked to death and Ethiopian military bombing civilian residential areas.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed tweeted on Sunday that his country was more than capable of achieving the objectives of its military operation against rebellious Tigray on its own.
The number of people fleeing Ethiopia’s conflict into Sudan has risen to over 20,000, UN refugee agency said on Sunday. Many of the refugees informed media that they were displaced by the federal government’s air strikes hitting civilian areas.
