MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Six people were killed on Tuesday in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a restaurant near a police academy, police spokesman confirmed.
Somali Police Spokesman Sadik Ali briefing press following the attack said six people, one of whom the suicide bomber died in the explosion with eight others wounded.
Witnesses who rushed to the scene shortly after the attack put the death toll at significantly higher figure than confirmed by police, adding that they saw the bodies of more than ten officers extricated from the wreckage of explosion damaged restaurant and more than a dozen injured personnel evacuated by ambulances.
Police officers outside a nearby General Kahiye Academy are reported to have opened fire immediately after the blast went off.
It could be seen huge clouds of smoke rising above the restaurant and ambulances heading to and from the direction of the site, in the city’s Hamar Jajab district near Mogadishu port.
Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist group Al-Shabaab says it was behind the attack, claiming to have killed 12 police officers and wounded 14 others, in a statement published by affiliated media.
