MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali MPs on Saturday voted to hike their monthly salaries to $5,000, triggering public outrage as authorities fail to provide humanitarian assistance to millions of people stalked by hunger and disease in flood-hit regions.
The move came after weeks-long debate over the approval of the government fiscal budget for 2024, which forced authorities to accept a pay increase for MPs.
Hours before the vote, the country’s disaster management agency, said the government had no funds to transport food and other live-saving consignments to towns worst hit by floods.
