Somalia’s cabinet approves defense cooperation agreement with Turkey

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s cabinet on Wednesday approved a defense and economic cooperation agreement signed with Turkey on February 8 amid escalating tensions over Somaliland and Ethiopia sea access deal.

As required by the agreement, Turkey will train and equip Somali navy, which Mogadishu wants to use for confronting what it calls an attempt by Ethiopia to annex parts of the Somali territory along the Red Sea. The deal is also set to boost the efficient utilization of maritime resources and blue economy.

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre said the deal will help efforts by the government to thwart threats from terrorists, pirates, illegal fishing, and toxic dumping as well as “other external violations” to the country’s sea.
