Somalia bans use of face masks and hats over security fears

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s government on Wednesday banned the use of face masks and hats due to security fears, days after insurgent attack at a heavily-fortified military academy in Mogadishu resulted in the death of UAE military officers.

A spokesman for Banadir regional administration, Salah Dhere, said the face masks were being used to hide identity and facilitate criminal activities.

The authorities had decided to impose the ban following a meeting convened by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud with officials of the security agencies, he added.

The official stressed that traditional sunnah hats worn by elders and religious scholars are exempt from the ban.
