MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s parliament on Monday began debate on controversial changes to the provisional constitution amid strong opposition from some of the country’s powerful political elite.
It came days after former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and the current Somali envoy for drought mitigation Abdirahman Abdishakur accused the president of moving ahead with constitutional changes to consolidate his grip on power.
Opposition leaders called for consensus and broad-based approach to amend the constitution, adding that they will not accept the outcome of president’s ongoing efforts to extend his term in office and abolish the position of Prime Minister.
