A vehicle packed with explosives was rammed into the gate of a military base in the town in Somalia’s Bay region, after which heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters stormed the camp where fierce fighting occurred.
Nearly an hour after the fighting began, Al-Shabaab militants managed to completely take control of the base and Goofgudud Burey town, local officials said.
At least 8 soldiers and officials among them Goofguduud Buurey district commissioner Isak Ali and police commander Hassan Baka were killed in the attack.
The Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab armed group said it was behind the attack, claiming to have completely taken control of the base and the surrounding areas, after government troops fled to the bush having incurred significant casualties.
Al-Shabaab fighters are said to have captured weapons and ammunition caches after overrunning the base.
Southwest and Somali military officials told media on Monday afternoon that troops have regained control of the base after militants withdrew.
