Blast Hits Bus Carrying Football Players in Somalia’s Kismayo

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least five people were killed after a bus ferrying football players in the coastal town of Kismayo in southern Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Jubaland struck a roadside bomb, local security officials said on Friday.

Motive behind the attack has not been immediately clear and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack that took place late on Friday afternoon, just a day after local authorities concluded a one-day election of candidates running for four Senate seats allocated for the region.

“We have confirmed five deaths and more than 12 injuries and we still have some players missing,” Captain Ahmed Farah told Reuters.

Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s office said he had sent condolences and blamed Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab for the deadly blast.

Local authorities say an investigation was launched into the assault and there are contradicting reports, some saying that a suicide bomber may have carried out the bombing.
