MUSCAT (Somaliguardian) – Two crew members, a British and a Romanian nationals, died in an attack on the Mercer Street petroleum products tanker in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Oman, an Israeli-owned company managing the ship said in a statement on Friday.
It comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, weeks after an Iranian vessel was targeted in an attack in the Arabian Sea. A number of Israeli ships have been targeted by similar assaults over the past years and Israel blamed Iran for all the attacks.
There were reports that the attack had been carried out by an unmanned drone, according to Al Arabiya TV.
In a brief statement, British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said a probe had been launched into the incident, which it described as happening late on Thursday night just northeast of Oman’s Masirah Islands.
